How to pitch

Email pitch

Attach the submission as a Word document (preferred) or paste it as plain text in the email body; do not send a link or PDF. Essays must be between 600 and 1,000 words — pieces over 1,000 words will not be considered and pieces under 600 words should be sent as a letter to the editor instead. Write for a national pre-K-12 audience, make clear who the piece is for, take a distinct point of view, back up factual claims, and be solution-oriented or practical. Straight news coverage, scholarly articles, and shameless self-promotion are not wanted, and all potential conflicts of interest must be disclosed. Generative AI must not be used for writing or research unless disclosed to editors beforehand. Include a short one to two sentence bio and a preferred phone number, and indicate the topic in the subject line. Do not submit simultaneously to multiple outlets, and do not send essays already published or accepted elsewhere. If there is no response after two weeks, consider the essay rejected.

Reviewer noteOpinion essays cannot be used for promotional purposes and undisclosed AI use is disqualifying. The two-week silence rule means a non-response is a rejection.
